It can be worth it — especially if your priorities align with what floor models offer:
You want something now rather than waiting
You’re okay with what’s already in stock (color, finish, etc.)
You inspect it carefully before buying
You negotiate if possible
But it’s less worth it if:
You want a perfect condition, or a custom piece
You’re very sensitive to minor aesthetic flaws
Warranty/return options are very important to you
What to check / questions to ask when buying a demo piece
To minimize risk, here are things you should do/check:
Inspect thoroughly
Look for scratches, chips, and color fade
Test joints/corners for wobble
Open/close drawers, doors to see smoothness
Upholstered items: check stitching, seams, and look for stains or wear
Ask about the warranty
Is it still under the manufacturer’s warranty, or has the demo status affected coverage?
Ask about the return policy
If you find something wrong after delivery, will the store fix/replace it? What is their policy for showroom purchases?
Make sure the price drop is worth the risk
Calculate how much you’re saving vs the potential cost of small repairs or future issues. If the discount is small, it might not be worth it.
Check delivery and assembly terms
Sometimes floor models might require special transport or handling because of size or fragility of showroom-finishing touches.
Sanitation/cleaning
For upholstered or upholstered demo pieces, ask if they’ve been cleaned or what their policy is. Sometimes helpful to negotiate a clean or cleaning discount.
