Furniture is always susceptible to chips and scratches, which damages their style and finish. The trouble you will face when fixing chips on your furniture will depend on how large or deep the chip is. If you are able to recover the piece that had chipped off you can sand it and glue it back, but it’s more complicated when the chipped part of the wood is missing. In such an instance you will need to use a filler and mask it with the appropriate coloring. Follow these three steps in order to fill the missing chip;

Step One

The first step will involve defining what kind of finish you have. Take a piece of cloth and moisten it with a lacquer thinner and then dab it on the part of the chipped furniture piece and feel the finish. In case it softens then its lacquer but if it hardens it is polyurethane.

Step two

Put the lacquer thinner inside a spray bottle and then mist the chipped part, if the finish you are using is lacquer it will emulsify, and when it softens it will flow out and the nick will later disappear and afterward, in about 10 minutes it will harden again.

Step three

Use extra-fine steel wool and rub over the chipped area if the finish is varnish. In case the rubbing doesn’t flatten, the finish well enough for the chip to disappear apply some extra varnish and let it dry overnight, and on the next day rub it with a ball of steel wool. If it does not flatten repeat the process again until it’s up to your liking.
