No matter how much you care for your wooden furniture, it tends to lose its appeal with time. The texture begins to fade and the color becomes uneven. If you are looking for ways to restore the appearance of your wooden furniture, this step by step guide on how to polish your furniture can help you achieve just that.

Before you begin polishing your furniture, make sure that the area you intend on working in is well ventilated – therefore, working outside will be an ideal choice. If this cannot be achieved, keep all the windows in your room open to promote as much ventilation as possible.

Materials you will be needing:

  1. Gloves made of rubber
  2. Clean rags
  3. Fine paste wax
  4. Wax remover and cleaner
  5. #0000 Super-fine steel wool

If you have taken proper care of your furniture, you will only need to apply wax to the surface using a soft, clean cloth. If, however, the furniture was not handled with care and contains marks and stains, you may have to use the super fine steel wool to restore the surface to its original condition. Steel wool comes in a huge variety of levels including superfine and super course, but in order to protect your furniture from getting damaged further, you must stick to the one mentioned above (#0000 Super-fine steel wool).

Step 1 – Stripping the original color

Take some wax remover onto a clean rag and gently wipe down the surface of your wooden furniture. Once you’ve wiped the entire surface, allow it to air dry for a couple of minutes. If you do not have a wax remover, you can mix equal parts of vinegar and water to create your own wax removing solution. Also, make sure to use the steel wool on any stains and marks present on the surface.

Step 2 – Polishing the Surface

Coat the entire surface of the wood sparingly with the polish. However, make sure not to over polish the surface, as you will be going back to wipe off the excess wax, once it has dried.

Step 3 – Buffing the Surface

Once the polish has been fully absorbed by the wood, which takes around 15 to 20 minutes, wipe off the remaining or excess wax using a clean dry cloth.

This step by step guide will help you restore the polished look of your dull, old, and stained furniture.
